Behind the work

The Merchant of Lies

Perhaps there is a liar in each of us. Not every lie, however, is born from the same place. Some are told with the intention of protecting, others out of fear or weakness. There are also lies that become habits, pathological lies, or lies constructed for purposes that others are not meant to see.

The Merchant of Lies is therefore not only someone else. It can be any one of us at the moment when we choose to exchange the truth for something easier, more convenient or more useful.

But every such exchange has a price. Whenever we sell a lie, however carefully we package it and however justified it may seem, we abandon a part of our own soul in its wake.

The work speaks about this invisible trade and about what we lose within ourselves when truth becomes a commodity. It offers no verdict, only a question: where do we each stand on the fragile boundary between truth and falsehood, and how much of ourselves are we willing to surrender when we cross it?
