Behind the work
Sunset Inside Hellas
I would have stayed a little longer in those narrow streets, with the walls still holding the warmth of the day and the sea appearing between the houses. One more flight of steps to climb, one more corner to lose myself around. In Greece, it is hard for me to say I have stayed long enough.
I love Greece with that appetite for life that makes me forget the time. I want to touch the walls, walk down to the water, then turn back for the light I caught on a facade. Towards evening, when white warms into pink and the shadows turn the steps blue, I wish I could put off leaving simply by looking more closely.
That longing is what made me paint. From memory. Because I have not seen Greece in a very long time. I let the houses draw closer, the streets become tangled, and the sea appear where I was looking for it. Through colour, I allowed myself one more evening in Greece. I was still in no hurry to get anywhere.
