Behind the work
Allure
He seems to know the way. Yes, he has the calm of someone who has been there before and the assurance you wish you had as you move forward.
Faced with so many doors, such a presence can bring relief. You draw closer, hoping that, at last, someone will show you where to go.
Only then do you notice what distance had concealed. His smile remains calm, but his gaze never leaves you. The gesture seems generous, although the hand beckoning you points not to the road, but to a single door.
Perhaps he sees a way out that you cannot yet make out. Or perhaps he only wants to lead you away from all the others. Nothing is asked of you yet. Only that you trust his appearance and whatever comes your way, until you forget to look back.
Gradually, that sense of certainty begins to resemble a trap. His voice is gentle, but every word closes off another possibility.
Behind the serene face lies an intention you cannot read, and the door you are being led towards no longer seems like a choice, but the only path left.
I painted this moment of hesitation, when the promise still shines, but danger begins to take shape in the shadows.
I am fascinated by how easily we mistake appearances for truth when we long for guidance, and how late we notice that, while listening to someone else, our own voice has stopped warning us.
